little border run

Did a little dash across the border with Brenno and Nathan Dorrington. North wall was offshore and around two foot, but when we crossed over to south wall it was howling from the south. Totally different winds 1 km apart! We ended up doing a quick session and bailing.

My beach time has been severely reduced this month with a my day job taking preference due to financial considerations. No money, no honey! It does mean I have been getting back into wildlife photography a bit. These are my favourite two photos of the last few weeks.

I have always found the native hawk, the Pacific Baza (Aviceda subcristata) to be a reasonably rare around the Gold Coast.

White-plumed Honeyeater (Lichenostomus penicillatus) I shot out in the Brigalow Belt in the south-west of Queensland

Wow I am still way back in June and it is now July. Time for everyone to get there tax returns done and get to Bali. See ya there! Though with the the recent run of east coast swell it is tempting to take the easy route and stay home.

Little Snapper Session

I was standing on the beach shooting thinking to myself how bored I was and why I wasn’t getting a wave for myself. When I got home and actually checked some photos and found a few little gems. The Snapper crew were blowing up!

Bali!!!

I have recently just returned from a two week stint in Bali and while you would have to be seriously strange not to have a good time, I did not achieve all my photographic goals. On the other hand I did end up with a couple of unexpected surprises such as  Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta which has 10,000 people praying on a Friday and 200,000 after major Islam holidays. I could have spent all day there instead of the ten minutes I ended up with.

If I had more time, you are allowed to shoot from the prayer broadcast tower.

Final shot I could grab before having to make a run for the airport

November Restrepo

November has gone, but I am not sure where. A pretty average month all up with only a couple of good days around the gold coast, with strong onshores the rest of the time.  Still OK for a wave, but I didn’t do much with the camera. As I am about to post the onshore winds still havent stopped for over a week now. There is always tomorrow.

The blog movie this time around is Restrepo., described as:

‘Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington’s year dug in with the Second Platoon in one of Afghanistan’s most strategically crucial valleys reveals extraordinary insight into the surreal combination of back breaking labor, deadly firefights, and camaraderie as the soldiers painfully push back the Taliban.’

I was really looking forward to this, as I prefer a good documentary to an average movie, but I think overall I would rate it as average to slightly disappointing.  It never really covered anything more I hadn’t seen any previous documentaries about the war, except in the length of a movie. A bunch of guys sit around in the desert, getting shot at on a daily basis, and spending most of the time under fire trying to work out who or even where the attack is coming from. The movie never really took me inside Afghanistan or into the soldiers heads except at a very shallow depth.

Overall: 2/5

October/November- AI GONE, KELLY WINS, INCEPTION

The unseasonable 2-3 foot swells keep rolling through, it all juts hinges on the tide and wind most days. Whether you have that freedom and time to find that perfect little beachie that will be gone the following day, forcing you to be constantly on the move looking for that little perfect bank.

Added to the daily confusion has been the death of Andy Irons, which has overshadowed the a 10th world title from Kelly Slater. I can never claim to have met Andy or even seen him surf in the flesh, but he seems to have had an effect on everyone he met. Bit of a shame I don’t have any photos worthy of such a legend.

People who no me might think it weird if I started doing movie reviews as I am known as hard to impress, but what the hell, I will see if I have the time to keep up it.  First movie is Inception. Honestly I don’t know what the big deal is about this movie. I found it to be over-pretentious crap.I found the whole dream inside a dream inside a dream ad infinitum to wear thin pretty quickly. I have tried watching it 3 times and everytime is the same.

I need to come up with some kind of graphics maybe for ratings, but i give it a  2/10.  Disagree? Feel free to comment.
